I have available funds. How do I go about setting up a scholarship or stipend payment for postgraduate research students?

If you would like to set up a scholarship, you will need to download the Scholarship Proposal Kit. The Kit contains:

  • Scholarship Proposal Form- to be completed by the Faculty/School/Centre
  • University Postgraduate Research Scholarship Model Conditions
  • Particulars of Scholarship Form- to be completed by the scholarship proposer, the Dean (or Dean's nominee) and Financial Services officer and,
  • Commencement of Study Form- to be completed by the student and supervisor awarded the scholarship.
To download the Scholarship Proposal Kit, go to the Scholarship Proposal Page.

I have been approached by a postgraduate research student from another University who wants to undertake research at UNSW for a short period under my supervision. How do they go about organising this?

Local postgraduate research students from other Universities will need to apply to UNSW as a Visiting Research Student, and international students as a Practicum Student. Details and application forms can be found on our site here.

One of my students is not progressing satisfactorily. What procedures need to be followed?

If the outcome of the student’s formal annual progress review was unsatisfactory, this will be noted at the next Higher Degree Committee. Details regarding procedure and possible outcomes can be found here.

One of my students has reached the maximum number of semesters in which to complete their degree and has requested an extension to the length of their candidature. What do I need to do?

The student’s case will need to be taken to the next Faculty Higher Degree Committee meeting by the Research Administration Officer from the Graduate Research School. As the supervisor, you will need to argue the student’s case for an extension, in writing, and provide this to the Graduate Research School Research Administration Officer prior to the Higher Degree Committee. Faculty Higher Degree Committee dates can be found here.

What are the rules around what I can and cannot tell a student regarding the examination of their thesis?

  • You can tell the student if the thesis has been sent out for examination.
  • You can tell the student how many reports, if any, have been received by the Graduate Research School.
  • You cannot tell the student the names of any of the examiners at any stage of the examination process. Examiners’ names will be released to the student by the Graduate Research School once their examination result has been approved by the Head of School, Executive Committee or Faculty Higher Degree Committee.
  • You cannot tell the student any of the examiners’ grades or comments made in their report until the student is required to undertake corrections or satisfies the conditions of the degree, whichever comes first.

One of my students wants to improve their English and has asked me about taking academic English classes. Are there such courses available for postgraduate research students?

The Institute of Languages runs a course, Academic English for Postgraduate Research Students. The 10 week course is available in both semesters 1 and 2. For more details, see the Institute of Languages website.

My student and I are working on a project together. What resources are available at UNSW for us to discuss our invention and the possibility of taking out a patent?

NewSouth Innovations focuses on the commercialisation of research and technology emanating from the University of New South Wales. NSi helps researchers (University staff and students) and inventors work with public and private sector enterprises to protect their intellectual property and develop new products and processes. Click here to visit their website.

Can students submit their thesis against the advice of their supervisor and School?

The supervisor's certificate states that the thesis is in the correct format for examination (ie., binding, layout, abstract etc). This certificate does not comment on the academic merit of the thesis. If a supervisor considers that the thesis is not likely to pass examination then they should advise the candidate for the reasons for this assessment. If the student does not accept this advice and indicates they intend to submit the thesis for examination, then a written submission from the School outlining the reasons for this assessment should be sent to the Chair of the Faculty Higher Degree Committee for a recommendation on whether the thesis be sent for examination. The Dean of Graduate Research should be advised of any such cases sent to the Higher Degree Committee for consideration.

What emergency counselling is available for Australian students studying overseas?

The Department of Foreign Affairs provides emergency services for Australians who are overseas and these services include access to Lifeline telephone counselling options for those negotiating a crisis overseas or who requiring counselling services whilst they are overseas. This service is available 24 hours a day 365 days a year. This is a service for all Australians but of course is available for Australian students on an overseas study exchange, placement or field study.

To access this 24/7 telephone counselling service students can ring the consulate emergency number +61 1300 555 135 and wait on the line or follow the offered selection +options for different services e.g press 2, 4, 5, 6 etc. - At the time of logging this information on this website option {6} was for emergency help.

Lifeline is only going to be crisis management (not therapy) but it is a 24 hour 7 day a week option for counselling needs in emergency situations.

Telephone calls to local Australian high commission/embassy/consulate in various countries can also be put through to Lifeline in Australia for the cost of a local call. If it is after hours in the country from which the person is calling their call is automatically transferred to Australia.

A web link that includes the telephone numbers for the Consular Emergency Centre is: www.smartraveller.gov.au/index.html
