Cotutelle Scheme

A Cotutelle agreement is an agreement between UNSW and a French university or other French tertiary education institution leading to the award of a doctoral degree from both institutions.

Candidates are enrolled at both institutions, pay fees at only one institution, and spend approximately half their candidature in France and half their candidature at UNSW.

A candidate who satisfies requirements for admission to the PhD will receive the award from both UNSW and the partner institution. Under such an agreement the award of the PhD is recognised on the transcript and testamur as under a Cotutelle agreement between UNSW and the French higher education institution.

  • The prospective student must submit the appropriate application for PhD candidature at least three months prior to the anticipated enrolment date in order to ensure that the student is eligible for admission, including meeting language requirements.

  • At least two months prior to the anticipated enrolment date, the student's proposed UNSW supervisor must complete and lodge the 'UNSW Cotutelle Proposal Form' at the Graduate Research School. The proposal must outline how the research will be managed across institutions to ensure a timely completion within 4 years, and include agreed financial arrangements, mechanisms to monitor student progress, intellectual property between institutions, ethics if appropriate, and thesis examination and graduation arrangements, in accordance with the relevant higher degree research policies and guidelines.

The proposed supervisor should ensure that they have read the UNSW Cotutelle PhD Degrees Policy and sample form available below prior to completing the proposal form.

Please Note:
Submission of an application for a Cotutelle Agreement does not guarantee that a student will be accepted for enrolment in a Cotutelle PhD at UNSW.   This research degree is classified as an exchange  programme by the Australian Government and UNSW monitors carefully the number of incoming French students and outgoing Australian students enrolled in Cotutelle PhD degrees each year.   Agreements will only be signed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor that meet the conditions outlined in the policy and taking into account the total number of Cotutelle enrolments at a given time.
