UNSW Petre Foundation Scholarship

Value & Tenure

$35,000 per annum

The Scholarship is provided for three (3) years to a student commencing a PhD. Students must commence in Semester 1 and be enrolled by 31 March. Awards cannot be deferred. Payment of the annual scholarship will be by fortnightly stipend.PhD students may be granted an extension for up to six months if their research was delayed by circumstances beyond their control. The circumstances must relate to the research and not be of a personal nature.

Outline

The Petre Foundation was established in 2001 by Daniel and Carolyn Petre. The scholarship is established to foster the advanced education of students who aspire to contribute to the betterment of mankind without particular regard for their own personal or commercial gain. The Scholarship will be awarded to a UNSW University Medallist who demonstrates aspirations to give back to society surrounding but no limited to, such as areas as poverty and hunger, youth at risk, child welfare, a sustainable environment, issues in developing countries, public health.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, an applicant must:

  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or be a permanent resident of Australia.
  • be a UNSW University Medallist and must apply for the Scholarship within 18 months of the award of the University Medal.
  • have applied for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)/University Postgraduate Award (UPA) at UNSW.
  • have applied to undertake a PhD at UNSW in an appropriate research area (as described in the above outline).
How to Apply

If you would like to be considered for this award, you must apply for a UNSW Local Research Scholarship, using the UNSW Local Research Scholarship application form and provide a paragraph of information about the impact of your proposed research to the betterment of mankind in the space provided.

Selection:

The information about proposed research activities and their anticipated benefits which will be assessed by a selection committee comprising the Dean of Graduate Research, a representative of the Petre Foundation, and one Faculty Associate Dean (Research).

Applicants must successfully demonstrate to the selection committee their aspirations to contribute to the betterment of mankind without particular attention to their own personal or commercial gain.

Applicants may be required to attend interviews to present their program proposal and the scholarship recipient will be expected to make a presentation of their proposal to the Petre Foundation Board.
