Information for Award Holders

Benefits & Tenure

Please see information on the Benefits and Tenure webpages.

Change of Research Area

A Scholarship holder may change the research area indicated in the original Scholarship offer providing:

  • The new research area is one of the University's areas of research concentration; and
  • There will be no extension of the duration of the Scholarship arising from the change of research area beyond the period of the original placement or Scholarship offer, including any previously approved extensions. The only exception is where the change of research area results from circumstances relating to the research, which are outside the control of the student and the University.
Residency Status

The Graduate Research School must be notified within 7 days of any change to an award holder's residency status. If the award holder becomes an Australian Permanent Resident or New Zealand citizen the award holder is no longer eligible to hold a UNSW International Research Scholarship. Such candidates will be considered for a local equivalent scholarship at the time of the residency/citizenship status change. Failure to inform the Graduate Research School of any change to an award holder's residency status within 7 days will result in Scholarship overpayment, which will be considered an outstanding debt to the University until repaid.

Please note: if your residency status is obtained after the Census date (Semester 1: 31st March; Semester 2: 31 August ) you are fee liable for that semester. The tuition fee payments provided by any of the Scholarships will NOT be refunded.

Work and Other Income

Other than work that is specified as a course requirement, an award holder with a student visa may undertake work unrelated to their course requirements consistent with the conditions of the student visa. However, the employment or source of income must not interfere with their research or their ability to undertake full-time study and cannot be accepted as grounds for extension of the scholarship. It is the University's expectation that full-time postgraduate research students will spend the equivalent of 35 hours per week on their higher research degree.

Students holding one of these scholarships may also hold other forms of scholarship however scholarship holders receiving a UNSW funded stipend such as an IPRS or UIPA stipend may not hold other forms of scholarship in conjunction with the IPRS/UIPA/UNSW-funded stipend where that other scholarship funding exceeds 75% of the IPRS/UIPA stipend in value. Scholarship holders must inform the Graduate Research School of any other scholarships held or awarded during candidature.

Termination of the Scholarship

The scholarship will be terminated:

  • Upon submission of the thesis (in accordance with the Commonwealth Guidelines http://www.backingaustraliasfuture.gov.au/guidelines/csg_guide.htm); or
  • If the scholarship holder is granted permanent residency status; or
  • If the scholarship holder ceases to meet the eligibility requirements (other than during a period in which the scholarship has been suspended); or
  • Once the maximum duration of the scholarship has been reached; or
  • When the scholarship holder ceases to be a full-time student; or
  • If the course of study is not being carried out with competence and diligence or in accordance with the offer of the scholarship; or
  • If the scholarship holder has failed to maintain satisfactory academic progress; or
  • If the scholarship holder has committed serious misconduct, including, but not limited to the provision of false or misleading information.
Obligations of Scholarship Holders

The award holder must advise the Graduate Research School prior to making any change that may affect their eligibility for the Award. For example, transfer of program (Masters by Research to PhD etc), a change of address (can be made online at MyUNSW), suspension of scholarship or program etc. Where it is not possible to provide prior advice concerning a change, notification must be sent to the Graduate Research School within 7 days of the change. Failure to notify the Graduate Research School of any changes that may affect the scholarship holder's eligibility for the scholarship will result in termination of the scholarship.

Renewal

Renewal of the scholarship each year will be subject to confirmation that progress has been satisfactory as per UNSW regulations.
