Information for Applicants

Purpose of Scheme

In 2007 the Commonwealth Government initiated a major new scheme to provide research commercialisation and innovation training for domestic higher degree research (HDR) candidates. The Commercialisation Training Scheme (CTS) aims to equip students with the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to bring research-based ideas, inventions and innovations to market.

The scheme will provide tuition fees and a scholarship of $10,000 to domestic PhD students to undertake a new Graduate Certificate in Research Management and Commercialisation concurrently with their PhD.

Successful CTS applicants will graduate with a PhD and a formal qualification in research commercialisation with the award of a Graduate Certificate at the end of four years.

CTS Funding

Each CTS funded place will provide the normal tuition fees for the Graduate Certificate (In 2010: up to $2790 per 6 Unit of Credit [UOC] course) and a scholarship of $10,000 which may be held in addition to any other scholarship the student may hold (APA, APAI, NHMRC, CRC etc). The CTS scholarship is equivalent to around 50% of a standard annual APA scholarship and is paid to students to cover the costs associated with the 1 semester duration of the Graduate Certificate in addition to the 7 semesters required to complete their PhD research supported by their APA, APAI or other scholarship. This is not a top-up scholarship, but provides additional funding in recognition that students will need an extra semester of enrolment after their APA or other scholarship expires, to complete their PhD.

The CTS scholarship will be paid in four instalments of $2,500 per 6UOC course. Students will be paid the $2,500 stipend on the first available pay date after March 31 or August 31 for each course undertaken.

CTS Scholarship recipients must not:

  • undertake full time employment during the period of the CTS Scholarship
  • be concurrently enrolled in any program other than the PhD

  • have received a satisfactory first year annual progress review and be on track to complete their degree within 4 years FTE;
  • undertake the Graduate Certificate on a part-time basis and concurrently with the PhD program;
  • not have previously completed CTS training.
Selection Criteria

Preference will be given to candidates:

  • who can best demonstrate that the skills, knowledge and experience gained by completing the Graduate Certificate will assist bringing research-based ideas, inventions and innovation to market; and
  • who are undertaking a PhD program and have the best prospects of pursuing a career that will utilise the skills, knowledge and experience gained by completing the Graduate Certificate; and
