2. What will CTS funded students receive? CTS funded students will receive:
3. How long will it take to complete the Graduate Certificate? The Graduate Certificate is designed to be completed in 4 consecutive semesters. Currently enrolled PhD students will enrol in one course per semester, completing the four courses in a maximum of two years concurrently with their research degrees. At the end of 4 years (8 semesters Full Time Equivalent [FTE]), students supported by the CTS will graduate with two qualifications, that is: a PhD (7 semesters FTE) and a Graduate Certificate Qualification (1 semester FTE). Students who fail to complete CTS training within 24 months from the date of commencement are ineligible to receive further support under CTS. 4. Can I enrol in two courses in one semester? A limited number of places may be available for students who wish to enrol in two courses in semester 1, 2010. You can apply to enrol in two courses in one semester, but preference will be given to applicants who are able to complete one course per semester. You will need to discuss this commitment with your supervisor and they would need to advise that they support your plans and do not believe it will interfere with your submission deadline or quality of your research. Prior to submitting your CTS scholarship application form you should discuss the impact of this additional workload on your thesis submission plan with your supervisor and your Faculty's Postgraduate Coordinator and seek advice on course combinations from Dr Wallace Bridge. In semester 1, 2010 if you are permitted to enrol in two courses the second course must be one of the Project Management electives. 5. How will enrolment in the Graduate Certificate affect the length of my PhD? The Graduate Certificate is formally equivalent to one semester of FT study. Hence while most PhD students complete their PhDs in 3.5 years (7 semesters), students who are awarded a CTS place will complete their PhD in 4.0 years, with the 8th semester of time allocated for the time required to complete the Graduate Certificate. Permission for concurrent enrolment in this coursework program will be granted. Please note:
6. Can I receive CTS funding if I am a part-time PhD student? Yes. In this case your enrolment status will be part-time in your PhD and part-time in the Graduate Certificate. 7. How will the scholarship be paid? The $10,000 Scholarship will be paid in four instalments of $2,500 per 6 Unit of Credit course. Students will be paid the $2,500 stipend on the first available pay date after March 31 or August 31 for each course undertaken, subject to enrolment in the course and fulfilment of attendance requirements. 8. Can I enrol in the Graduate Certificate full-time if I am receiving the CTS funding? No. It will only be possible for students to enrol in the Graduate Certificate on a part-time basis. Most currently enrolled PhD students will enrol in one course per semester, completing the four courses in a maximum of two years. A limited number of students may be given permission to enrol in two courses per semester but this is still a part time enrolment. Please refer to Question 4 9. I am an international student - can I still complete the Graduate Certificate? Yes, with permission from your supervisor. However, this is a full fee paying course and you would be liable for course fees. You should discuss your proposal with your supervisor and consider carefully the impact of the additional workload on your thesis submission date, as you will be liable for full tuition fees and living costs. 10. When are classes held, ie during working hours or at night? The timetable for the Communication in Professional Management course to be held in Session 1, 2010 has not been finalised yet, but the class will be held as a single weekly workshop either in the morning or afternoon. The relevant course coordinator will need to be contacted regarding timetabling for the remaining courses. Please check the website regularly for further details. 11. What type of assessment is involved in the courses? The assessment will vary between courses. For Communication in Professional Management, (to be held in Session 1, 2010), assessment for this course is expected to be: 25% workshop participation (students will be required to do significant preparation for each workshop); assignments (there will be 2 individual assignments – one due in Week 8 (25%) and another in Week 12 (15%). The final exam (Week 14) will be worth 35%. The relevant course coordinator will need to be contacted regarding assessments for the remaining courses. Please check the website regularly for further details. 12. Will the CTS scheme be available in S2, 2010? Places will only be offered in S2, 2010 if there are unfilled scholarships from this round. 13. Will the CTS scheme be available next year? The current advice from the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science & Research (DIISR) which funds the CTS scheme, is that UNSW will receive funding for more scholarships next year and we are expecting to offer another round of scholarships subject to receiving this funding. 14. Who can I speak to regarding course content? Please contact Dr Wallace Bridge, convenor of the Graduate Certificate, for information regarding course content. Dr Bridge can be emailed at: w.bridge@unsw.edu.au 15. Is the $10,000 scholarship tax-free? Yes. 16. The information on the website says candidates are expected to complete their PhDs in 4 years if undertaking the Graduate Certificate. Is this a minimum requirement or just a guide? Can I complete my thesis in less than 4 years? The PhD requires a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 4 years of full time study. While the average PhD student completes their PhD in 3.5 years, and would therefore use the 8th semester of time to complete the Graduate Certificate and submit within 4 years, you may be planning to complete earlier and you would be eligible to apply as long as you will spend 3 years full time equivalent study on the PhD. 17. Will this certificate count towards a diploma or masters in business management? At present this is a stand-alone qualification. It may be possible in the future to articulate on to a further degree, however this cannot be guaranteed. Whether the current courses are available for advanced standing against other postgraduate qualifications will be a decision that will need to be made by the particular institutions and program authorities. 18. I am enrolled as a Masters by Research student but have applied to transfer to a PhD. Am I eligible to apply for this scheme? Yes, your supervisor will need to confirm that your Masters by Research is progressing at a high level and that they expect your application for transfer to a PhD to be approved. Your supervisor should also provide the anticipated date of the upgrade. 19. I am planning to submit by 31 March 2011. Can I enrol in 2 courses in Semester 1, 2010 and 2 courses in Semester 2, 2010 in order to be able to do this? You can apply, but preference will be given to applicants who are able to complete one course per semester. You will need to discuss this commitment with your supervisor and they would need to advise that they support your plans and do not believe it will interfere with your submission deadline or quality of your research. For further information please refer to Question 4 20. I have submitted my thesis but am still formally enrolled as a research student. Am I eligible to apply for the scholarship? Students who have already submitted their thesis are ineligible to apply for the scheme. |
