Kensington Campus

Learning Centre

The Learning Centre provides a wide range of academic support services to UNSW postgraduate research students. Assistance is available through workshops in advanced level academic skills, individual consultations, discipline-based courses, online academic skills resources and many books on thesis writing are available for loan.

Workshop programs typically include:

* Thesis Writing
* Writing a Thesis Proposal
* Practising Conference Presentations
* Writing a Literature Review
* Advanced Academic Writing Program for postgraduate research students and much more.

You can also make a booking for a one-on-one consultation with a Learning Adviser to discuss specific issues or queries.

If there are a number of students in your School or Faculty who require a particular course, you can approach the Learning Centre to organise a course for your area. The Centre also provides workshops and activities for non-English-speaking background students including ‘Conversation Practice’ and ‘Polishing Your Pronunciation’. Talk, Exchange, Listen & Learn (TELL) is a weekly communication skills program for international postgraduate research students.

IT Support

Email
All UNSW students are provided with a free email account. You will need to set up this account after you have enrolled. It is important you check your University email address regularly or arrange to have this forwarded to an account that is checked often. Official communication from the University and fees statements etc will be sent to this account. It is your responsibility to ensure that you check this account regularly.

University Password (Unipass)
You will need to use your Unipass to access a range of services throughout your candidature. When you are issued with your Unipass, it will be as a random series of numbers and letters (in upper and lower case). You should make sure you change your Unipass so that you can remember it easily. You can do this here.

Computer Laboratories
The UNSW Student Organisation provides a 24-hour postgraduate computer lab for all postgraduates at UNSW. The lab is located on the ground floor of the Library and contains a printer (you need a Unicopy card). Swipe card access is required and can be obtained from the E-spot.

The Library has computer laboratories available for general use to all students at UNSW. These are only available during library opening hours. Printing is available at standard library printing costs. For more information please visit the library website.

Counselling Service

The Counselling Service offers a broad ranging support service for both postgraduate and undergraduate students at UNSW. Through the COMPASS program students can access services including individual counselling, skills development courses and self-help resources. The University Health Service is a complete general practice situated within the University. The medical practitioners bulk-bill medicare. The service is open to students, staff and visitors to the campus.

Accomodation Services Central

The Accommodation Services Central office assists students to find accommodation while they are at UNSW. The office manages and takes applications for the University's self-catering apartments. A database of off-campus accommodation in the local area is also kept by the office. Students looking for accommodation can visit the office to look at the listing boards or search online if connected to the University Wide Network.

Security Service

The UNSW Security Service provides a 24 hour security service on campus. This includes an escort service to car parks or bus stops at night. During semester, from 6pm to midnight, the Unibeat shuttle bus operates from 9 stops on campus and continues to Randwick Junction and UNSW Randwick Campus. Bus Timetables are available from any gatehouse, the Security front office or Tel: 9385 6000 and some will be sent to you.

There are a number of security Helps Points located on campus. Help Points are blue intercom systems directly linked to the Security Control Centre. When the Help Point is activated, it dials the Security Control Centre emergency line.

Transport

Eligible students will be issued with a transport logo on their student ID card that allows concession travel on all CityRail, State Transport Authority, NSW Country Link services (including services to Melbourne and Brisbane) and private bus services with the Sydney Metropolitan area.

Part-time and international (full-fee) students are not entitled to transport concession under NSW Government legislation.

Please note: International Research Students who are in receipt of an Australian Government Scholarship, i.e. EIPRS & AUSAID, are also entitled to NSW public transport concession.

International Student Services

International Student Services (ISS) helps students from overseas adjust to living in Sydney and studying at UNSW. ISS offers arrival services as well as an extensive range of on-going support services and activities. Come and talk to an International Student Adviser to discuss any matters of concern such as study, social or personal issues. You can also join in a range of social and cultural activities to meet other students and to learn about Australia and its culture. Meet and mingle with other international research students at International Research U-Nite, held once every 2 months at the ISS Lounge. Check the website for the latest activities and programs offered and subscribe to the email list is-forum to keep in touch with other international students.

Legal Services

The UNSW Student Organisation offers a free Legal Service for students. The solicitor is employed by the Organisation, not the University, and you will receive absolute discretion and impartial advice. The solicitor also advises on non-academic matters, including traffic offences, tenancy problems etc. For an appointment call the Student Guild.

IT Support

The Computing Services Unit (CSU) is responsible for COFA’s information technology requirements and facilitates the computing user needs of COFA by providing technical hardware and software support to users of COFA’s technology systems.

The support desk provides first level technical support for staff and students of COFA. The support desk also maintains software/hardware requirements of the COFA’s computing labs, studios and staff computing facilities.

In addition to the Unipass that is used for online services at UNSW, COFA students will also have a COFApass, for COFA-specific computing services such as printing, logging onto COFA Lab computers and logging onto discussion forums etc.

Computer Laboratories
Central computing facilities at COFA include, two teaching labs, five research labs, one general access lab, digital audio and video workstations and studios. All COFA postgraduate students automatically have 24 hr, 7 days a week, access to the General Access Laboratory. To access the lab ensure your student card has been encoded for access, you can do this at the COFA student centre.

COFA postgraduate research students can apply for 24 hr, 7 days a week, access to their relevant school postgraduate research lab. Application for access and bookings is available online.

In addition to computer laboratories located at COFA, postgraduate research students can also access computer laboratories available at the Kensington campus offered by the Postgraduate Board and UNSW Library.

Counselling Service

UNSW@ADFA has contracted Davidson Trahaire to provide an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which is a free, totally independent and entirely confidential counselling service. This service is funded by UNSW@ADFA to help civilian employees and civilian post-graduate students deal with work and life issues.

You can make an appointment to see a Davidson Trahaire (ACT) counsellor by phoning 62852100. In some cases you may be able to talk your problem through over the telephone. In other cases, face-to-face counselling will be appropriate.

A 24 hour telephone service, with accredited counselling staff, is also available on 1300 360 364.

IT Support

The ICTS service desk offers the following services for students: email services; changing UNIPASS and ADFAPASS passwords; technical help with WebCT; re-issue damaged or lost Student ID cards; connection of personal student computers to the UNSW@ADFA local area network; point of contact for issues regarding student computing laboratories.

ICT provides two 24-hour computer laboratories located under Lecture Theatres North (one PC & one MAC). These labs are available to students who do not have access to their own personal computer and can be accessed by swiping your student ID card. Schools manage other special-purpose computer laboratories. Please check with your School for a description of available facilities and the specific access information required to use them.

University Password (Unipass) & ADFApass

Academy Library

The Academy Library provides specialised services to postgraduate research students. Liaison Librarians provide individual assistance with:

* Checking relevant theses resources to see whether similar research has already been produced in Australia or overseas
* Developing relevant search strategies and identifying appropriate search tools for locating material for your research area
* Undertaking initial searches of the relevant literature, both at the beginning and near the end of your thesis preparation
* Providing you with training sessions to familiarise you with the functionality of the various online resources available (eg there are over 200 databases at your desktop)
* Research matters such as identifying information services which deliver regular and automatic e-mail notification of new articles, books and other resources and assisting you to establish these current alerts

In addition, Liaison Librarians provide tailored information skills and EndNote training, to assist you in undertaking your research.

For material not held by the Academy Library there is an online interlibrary loan and document delivery service. Requests can be placed from wherever you have access to the internet.

When you need help, there is an online AskUs service where you can place requests for assistance and track their progress.

UNSW@ADFA Research & Research Training Office

The Research and Research Training Office is located in the Research hub in Building 21. Building 21 also incorporates the Research Student Precinct and Research Student Lounge. The precinct houses a pool table, table tennis table, computers and printers for use by postgraduate research students. There is a TV room and DVD recorder for use by research students and daily newspapers are also provided.

UNSW@ADFA Research & Research Training Office administers scholarships and annual progress reviews for postgraduate research students and organises workshops to develop and enhance research students’ skills. The Research Workshop Program is run twice a year in cooperation with the University of Canberra, Australian National University, the Australian Catholic University and UNSW@ADFA. The Program provides postgraduate research students the opportunity to explore relevant issues and enhance research skills. The Program addresses the key learning areas of Knowledge, Inquiry, Communication, Organisation, Creativity and Ethical practice. The Program is offered at no cost.
