Postgraduate Research Student Study Space

UNSW Library Level 4

student sitting at workstation
The Postgraduate Research Student Study Space in the UNSW Library was created to increase the number of dedicated workspaces available to UNSW postgraduate research students to enable them to carry out their research activities on campus.

This facility is managed by the Graduate Research School in conjunction with the UNSW Library and contains 75 individual workstations on level 4 of the Library building on the UNSW Kensington Campus.

Research students with assigned access to the space have 24 hour swipe card access to this secure area where they are able to carry out their research, write up their thesis, practice giving presentations, meet with colleagues, prepare food and relax. There are also a limited number of lockers available for students to securely store books, papers and other research materials.

During semester 1 2009 there are two types of access available:
  1. Dedicated Workstation Access
The workstations with desktop computers are assigned to specific students for the semester (on either an individual or shared basis, depending on demand). Each workspace includes a computer running standard library software (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Microsoft Office, Endnote, Java plug-ins for WebCT etc). Please note: Macintosh computers are not available.
Only postgraduate research students who do not have access to other dedicated on-campus computing and office facilities can apply for a dedicated workstation. Supervisor/School confirmation that no other suitable space is available is required.
Or
  1. General Access
Access to the level 4 Study Space where there are desks that can be used by students with personal laptops; wireless access is available. Students will also be able to utilise the communal facilities.

Please note that as there are a limited number of dedicated workstations some applicants may miss out in the first instance. Usage is monitored by the Graduate Research School and access may be re-allocated to students on the waiting list when workstations are being underutilised.

Workstation Sharing

  • Depending on demand, students may be required to share occupancy of a dedicated workspace with another student
  • The two students will be assigned set days when they will be eligible to access the workstation
  • Students assigned a shared workstations are free to access the communal facilities at any time
Eligibility

As there are only 75 workstations available students are strongly encouraged to apply for any other relevant workspaces on campus, and to discuss other options with their supervisor and their School.

To apply for access to a Dedicated Workstation with a desktop computer:
  • Students must be enrolled in a UNSW doctoral or research masters degree
  • Only students who do not have access to other dedicated on-campus computing / office facilities are eligible to apply
  • Both full- and part-time students are eligible to apply

To apply for General Access to the Level 4 Study Space to work with a personal laptop computer:
  • Students must be enrolled in a UNSW research masters or doctoral degree
  • Both full and part-time students are eligible to apply

Please note: there are a limited number of work stations available, so not all applications may be successful. Preference is given to those who are nearing the end of their candidature.

Due to the high demand for the limited number of spaces usage of the dedicated workstations will be monitored during semester. Access will be removed from students who do not utilise it and the workstation will be assigned to the next student on the waiting list.

Application Process

Students are required to submit an application form to the Graduate Research School.
Students must indicate on the form if they wish to apply for access to a dedicated workstation with desktop computer or general access to the Study Space so that they can use a personal laptop computer and the communal facilities.
Instructions for lodging the application are contained within the form.

Applications for access in Semester 1 close 31 March 2009
