International Students Thinking of doing a Higher Research Degree at UNSW? All prospective postgraduate research students are encouraged to contact the Faculty/School directly prior to submitting an application to do a higher research degree. For guidance on the initial stages prior to application, please refer to the Finding a Supervisor and Research Area Page on this website. This page provides you with useful contacts for Faculties and Schools and practical advice on approaching and selecting a supervisor. If you require additional information you can obtain a Faculty prospectus from the International Office. 2009 International Postgraduate Research Student Guide The 2009 International Postgraduate Research Student Guide is now available, please see the following webpage for further information. International Postgraduate Research Application Once you have found the Faculty/School you wish to apply to you need to put together an application. Please refer to the How to Apply Page, this will provide you with a step by step guide to the application process at UNSW. Please note all students are encouraged to Apply Online. All applications will be acknowledged and assessed for eligibility. Successful applicants will be sent an offer of admission with details of acceptance and enrolment procedures. Students should return the confirmation of acceptance and the required deposit to reserve their place. Once the deposit is received, an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (e-CoE) will be sent to the applicant. In certain cases specific security, health and financial documents must also be completed before the e-CoE is issued. Important dates for International Students can be found here. English Requirements The language of instruction at UNSW is English. Applicants who are applying on the basis of qualifications not conducted in the English language must provide proof of their competence in English. Please read the UNSW English Language document for details of the English Language Proficiency Requirements for Admission to the University and for further information. Scholarships and Financial Assistance For full information on scholarships and financial assistance please click here. Student Visa Information For full details regarding student visas please view the online information at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) or your nearest Australian Diplomatic Mission. Working while on a Visa International students may apply for work rights on their student visa. Working rights permit students to work up to a maximum of twenty hours per week during semester, and full-time during semester break. Overseas Student Healthcare Cover (OSHC) Standard Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is a health insurance policy designed to provide affordable access to medical and hospital treatment for international students or their family dependents while studying in Australia. As an International Student, it is a condition of your student visa that you have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the entire duration of your stay in Australia. Students must have OSHC as part of their student visa (Please note: there are exceptions to this rule for example some Norwegian and Swedish students). The University's preferred provider is Worldcare. You can obtain OSHC with Worldcare or with another provider of OSHC. If you decide to choose another provider of OSHC, you will not be disadvantaged by UNSW. If you decide to obtain OSHC with Worldcare, the University will receive a commission - this is used to improve services to students. Change in Visa Status If during your application your visa status changes please refer to the Enrolment Page on the current student website. Further information for international students is available from the International Office website. Educational Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) The ESOS Act 2000 is Commonwealth Government legislation that ensures providers of education and training are regulated in the delivery of education services to international students. All providers and programs available to international students are required to be registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).
