Finding a Supervisor & Research Area

Before applying for a higher research degree you will need to match your area of interest to one of our Faculties or Schools.

Getting Started

The best place to start is to check the Future Students website for the Faculty that best aligns with your area of research. These websites will provide you with useful information. A full list of Faculties and Schools can be found here.

Alternately, a majority of Faculties have searchable databases or full listings of academic staff and research areas. These may assist you identify an appropriate school and staff with experience in your area of interest. Please click on the links below:

Once you have located a School that you feel best supports your area of research you will then need to find a supervisor in that area. The best person to contact in the initial stages is the Postgraduate Coordinator for that School. For an up to date listing of Postgraduate Coordinators for all Faculties and Schools please click here.

The Postgraduate Coordinator can be contacted regarding the possibility of conducting a research program within their School and can help you find an appropriate supervisor.

Providing as much information as you can to a School in relation to prior research experience can assist the School assess whether they are able to assist you. We would suggest you put the following information in your initial correspondence with the School:

 Initial information to be provided to Schools to assist them with handling your enquiry
Full contact details: Phone number including full country & area codes, postal address, email address
A summary of your research interests
Qualifications
Your research experience to date
Proposed starting date if offered a place

Choosing a supervisor is an important decision. The ideal supervisor is knowledgeable of the topic you plan to undertake your research on, has good research skills and experience and is someone you feel you can work with. It is a good idea to meet with staff who you feel have expertise in your area of interest.
